Israel panic over FIFA suspension
The campaign to suspend Israel from FIFA suffered a setback this week, when the Palestinian Football Association backed down under pressure, and did not submit the motion to suspend FIFA to a vote. The decision to drop the suspension was disappointing, but it doesn’t mean it’s game over for this campaign, with unprecedented levels of support for suspension of Israel from FIFA.
With this new energy around the campaign we can now be even stronger in our demands and in our actions to kick Israeli racism out of football. Conversations about Israeli apartheid and occupation have reached even more people, and given further prominence to BDS campaigns. More and more people are aware of Israel’s racism and human rights abuses and the Palestinian struggle to achieve their rights.
The fact that Israel came so close to facing suspension is a clear sign that Israel’s increasing international isolation has intensified, and it is seen as a pariah state. It’s essential that we keep building the movement. Make sure you put the next big event in your diary: Wales plays Israel in Cardiff on 6 September. Get involved in the protest and actions on the day! Stay up to date here.
