Sabeel-Kairos Palestine: Letter of support regarding Government plans to stop companies divesting from occupation
In support and solidarity of UK civil society members and groups who are opposing the government plans to stop local councils making their own ethical decisions about their investments, here is a letter from Sabeel-Kairos Palestine
In solidarity with our friends and supporters in the United Kingdom
“Because they lead my people astray, saying, ‘Peace’ when there is no peace, and because when a flimsy wall is built, they cover it with whitewash, therefore tell those who cover it with whitewash that it is going to fall!” (Ezekiel 13:10-11)
Around 20 000 people support a bid by the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign and other Christian/Civil Society Organizations to reject a UK-government decision to veto investment decisions by democratically elected local authorities on investments supporting the illegal Israeli Occupation.
The moral history bends slowly towards justice as Martin Luther Junior rightly claimed. The world is learning to be more responsible and righteous. Hence we see growth in ‘Green municipalities’ which adopted fair trade principles and divested from tobacco or arms companies. These positive developments are fortunately occurring not only in the UK but in many parts of the world. Many local authorities, and other democratically elected institutions, also decided that they will not procure services from companies that aid Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and therefore decided to stand in solidarity with the movement of justice and peace working by the nonviolent measure of boycott and divestment.
The Conservative Government in Great Britain is planning a significant assault on political freedom and is seeking to shield Israel from the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanction) campaign and therefore legitimizes support of human right violations and apartheid policies.
Sabeel-Kairos Palestine believes in the power of nonviolence resistance in the face of Israeli land theft and racism. BDS is a nonviolent moral movement to end longstanding suffering of the Palestinian people at the hands of a discriminatory system that continues daily to seize more and more land.
Now is a critical moment in time where people of conscience should act for justice to counter the growth of dangerous terrorism and violence. Just the last week, the number of home demolitions in the West Bank by Israeli authorities reached a new record. Over the first half of the last year the number of new Israeli colonial settlement units in Palestine increased by 54,8% compared to 2014. There are more than 650 000 Israeli settlers now living on occupied land from Palestinians! This ongoing brutal policy of land grabbing is not only morally wrong – it is also against international law – the International Court of Justice confirmed that in 2004.
We call upon the British Government to stop the inhuman decision that attacks democracy and to stand with humanity and international law. Do not support the Israeli regime in committing war crimes and human rights violation. The censorship of decisions made by local authorities is already a step in this direction!
“Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit!” (Ezekiel 18:31)
