Songs from the Fifth Gospel – a new resource from Garth Hewitt
A new resource from Garth Hewitt – Songs from the Fifth Gospel, a double album of songs, prayers and stories about the land once known as ‘holy – for those on pilgrimage.
Garth says,
“St Jerome in the third century described the Holy Land as ‘the fifth gospel’, and when I use the phrase ‘fifth gospel’ I am thinking, not just of the land, but especially the people of the land. The album is a prayer that Palestinians and Israelis will be treated as equal human beings, so the occupation of Palestinians will stop, justice will come, and then there will be peace and security for all.”
Songs from the Fifth Gospel may be helpful in preparation for a visit to the Holy Land and also as a reminder afterwards. Once people have been on an alternative pilgrimage and come back wanting to talk about what they have seen and learned, the songs on the album may help them share their experiences.
Many of the 33 songs on the double album are suitable for singing in situ during the pilgrimage and others for listening to in specific places or during evening or morning devotion times.
For instance the album begins with a song called Ten Measures of Beatury (Pray for the peace) – the chorus is catchy and is sung by people visiting Dominus Flavit, looking across at Jerusalem in the context of where we remember Jesus weeping over the City. The lyrics of this song are up in St George’s Cathedral Jerusalem where it has often been sung. Another song, No Injustice (will last forever), gives people a way to respond when faced with the towering separation wall.
